Star Trek’s Big Black Hole

I enjoyed the movie, but can someone please explain to me why the Romulans drilled to the core of a planet in order to plant red matter? ¬†Afterall, black holes are created later in the film without a planet’s core working as a catalyst. It seems the red matter can work in any conditions: Spock uses it in open space to halt the star’s explosion; and our heroes use it against the Romulans to destroy their ship. So what gives? Why use a drill to penetrate the planet?

  1. I think they wanted non sci-fi fans to watch this movie, so the writers used a plot device that makes no sense whatsoever to those of us who follow Star Trek seriously. After thinking about it for a while, I thought this movie sucked as a Star Trek movie, but, was a fairly good science fiction movie(in spite of what I wrote in my blog! lol)

I too enjoyed it, but had some trekkie disappointment myself. But my hypothesis is, I think the Romulans were trying to just hurt the planet itself, a safety measure to the rest of the universe. A black hole closing in on itself. The star Spock was trying to destroy contained much more energy, than a planet, and the electricral storm in space surrounding the Romulan ship did as well.

Doesn’t it seem a little absurd that the Romulans care about how “neatly” they destroy a planet?

They’re out to destroy the whole Federation!

I think the Romulans wanted Spock and Earthlings to suffer–to know they were going to die. It was a torture of a sort. If you just blow them up, where’s the death and destruction anticipation? The Romulans wanted vengeance, not just the death. Remember that the Rumulan leader didn’t execute Captain Pike. Instead, he told Pike I want you to watch and feel the pain. Hence the drill.

  4. The Romulans didn’t kill Spock or Captain Pike, because they wanted to make them suffer. This is about revenge not just executing enemies. To just create a black hole the “easy way” would mean their would be not anticipation of demise. Pretty scary, if you’re on Earth watching the drill, knowing the end is near. And on the other hand, if you are a Romulan, delicious satisfaction as you terrorize and seek vengeance. Hence the drill.
